Weather Data exchange September 2014

August Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
For record comparison HU are compiled from May 10 to Sept 20

We missed any frost so far but it was close with a 3 on the 19th. Still running behind with
HU again in September ending a little below average at the cutoff on September 20. That is
compounded for the crops since so much was not planted until late in May and missed the first
200 or so HU in my records for the year.

Missing the frost is helping out and warm weather in the last week now has HU acquired by
the crops around 2730 HU so we only need another week of fair weather to get to my average
HU number and forecasts remain above freezing so we will have a mature crop to harvest.

Edible bean harvest is well under way with good yields and quality.

Soys are barely started as most are not mature enough to combine yet.

Wheat is being seeded behind the combines in most fields of beans harvested but much will be
later planted as harvest gets later for soys and the rest of the edibles.

Almost no silage chopped yet as the corn is slow maturing enough.

There are a number of 2014 wheat fields planted to forage crops in August that are looking
to have good growth and will need harvesting before a killing frost too.

If October remains warm we will harvest a good crop like we did in 2000 when we had only
2422 HU to September 20.

Many will remember 1992 when harvest did not go so well even though we finished with 2570 HU
but the weather in October makes the difference.

October will be a busy month with so many crops to harvest before winter sets in and
hopefully frost will hold off

September Weather from Peter Stewart, S.E. Northumberland County
The crop is not in the bin, but it gets closer to making it every day. We have dodged
killing frost for the most part locally. Sept 12 - 20 produced single digit lows every
night with the 19th recording a 2. There was local frost, but not killing. Double digit
lows from the 24 to 30th have certainly revived spirits.

HU came out close to average counting from May 1st. Most corn was not planted then.
However we have gained HU from Sept 21st on; some say our best weather of the summer.

Soybean harvest has begun where possible. Results seem to be pleasing to most.
Later planted beans may remove any smiles. Corn maturity remains stubbornly slow.
Waiting for corn to dry for corn silage harvest is like waiting for the pot to boil.
Some have tried successfully. Many have tried only to find it much to high in moisture.
Patience is the password but it is difficult.

Winter wheat is being planted. Some hay fields have been burned down to accommodate this.
Where beans are coming off, planters are chasing. After 12 months of cool wet weather, no one
is taking anything for granted on a warm open fall to get it planted.
